There are a variety of people that might use surveys to find out public opinion. Television companies would like to know what you watch and why you watch it, so that they could get their viewing figures. Food manufacturers want to know what you eat and why, so that they can increase their share of the market and political parties would love to know who you are going to vote, so that they know what their election chances are.

Businesses, schools, news sites, and governmental departments all need to do surveys to find out people's opinions. Businesses need to do market research to learn how people might react to new products and how much they are willing to pay. If they don't know about their customers well it can be a disaster. Universities need to know that their students are satisfied with campus life and learn what new programs students might like. Newspapers always want to learn people's opinions about different social issues. And of course, governments occasionally do a census to learn as much as they can about their citizens.
