The pie charts describe how the number of university students who can use other languages in England changed in two separate years, 2000 and 2010.
In 2000, those who can use Spanish as the second language had the biggest proportion, taking up 30%, while those who cannot speak any other language were the second largest part (20%). Students who were only able to speak French and another language represented 30% collectively. In contrast, 10% of the students could say German. The same figure was reflected in two-other-language speakers.
In 2010, Spanish speakers remained the largest percentage, with a rise of 5%. Such an increase also could be found in the proportions of students who used another unnamed language and who were able to speak two foreign languages. The number of students who cannot speak any foreign language fell by half to 10%. French speakers also dropped, but less significantly, by 5%. Interestingly, German speakers maintained the same level.
Overall, the charts clearly show the drastic shift in the proportions of second language users of this university.
